He’s come to kill me.

I’m a user and abuser of my own body. In the darkest hour I sold my soul to the devil and now I must pay the price. With his gun to my head I have no choice but to listen and obey, but I refuse to go down easily. Nothing is stronger than the will to survive. My instincts kicked into full gear the second he stepped into my motel room.

Except when I look at him I see my own heart staring back at me. A history tainted by blood.

I don’t know his name, but I know he wants me. To save myself I’ll sacrifice my sanity. My body. My soul. Something tells me the x-shaped scar that marks his eye is the only escape I have. He is Mr. X; the man who comes to claim my life. Can I save myself before he demands my heart?

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, breath depravation, strong language, drugs and alcohol, and graphic violence, which may be considered triggers.

Excerpt:

“Are you comfortable, little bird?” I ask, walking to the other side of the bed.

“Fuck you.”

“Now, now, I thought I had already established that is not the purpose of this intrusion.”

“Well then what the fuck do you want from me? Are you here to watch me do myself? Are

you here to kill me? Are you going to sit there and wait until I confess my darkest secrets to

you? Or do you want me to do a little dance for you, huh?” she muses. “Because I sure as hell

have no clue why the fuck you are in my room, trying to fucking blow my brains out!”

I laugh and shake my head at her outburst. Grabbing her other hand, I secure it to the

bedpost and tie up her last remaining free limb. Strapping it up nicely until she hisses from the

pain, I say, “None of that.” I wink. “Or maybe all of them.”

“Oh, screw you! I don’t deserve any of this. What have I ever done to you?”

I frown, gazing down upon her. Her eyes speak the truth. “You don’t remember, do you?”

Her eyes widen and her lips part. It takes her a few seconds to answer. “Remember what?”

“Everything.”

Excerpt

Through the haze of sleep, I felt hands on me. Cold and rough. I thought for a fleeting moment that it might have been Kyle.

Then, I remembered our break up.

It had happened weeks ago, but maybe that part was the dream. My memory was fucked and I couldn’t latch onto a thought long enough to ride it out of the fog.

“Did you make a decision?” Kyle asked.

I rolled over and pulled the comforter up to my neck. I had decided that I didn’t want to make a decision—mostly that I didn’t appreciate him trying to force me into a decision when I had told him time after time that I didn’t want him moving into my apartment even after six months together.

“You can barely afford the place anyway since your sister moved out. I don’t get why it’s such a big deal unless you don’t want to be together.”

I did, and yet, the threat of him leaving seemed like a relief….

Hands groped and pulled—rough against my skin and digging into muscle and bone. Too many hands. The bits of memory faded as I tried to retreat from the onslaught. My back pressed into a hard surface beneath me, and my nostrils filled with the smell of musk and damp stale air.

I had no idea where I was, or how I’d gotten there.

I kicked and gasped, trying to get back to the surface where reality lurked. It shimmered in the distance, just out of reach, like the sun on the surface of the water during a dive.

A hand latched onto my hair and held my head back. My eyelids were finally freed from the sticky muck that held me in semi-consciousness, and I opened them to find myself staring up into unfamiliar eyes.

I only held his gaze for a few seconds—if that—but it seemed like it lasted for hours as my brain fought to categorize the details. Its useless attempt to understand what was going on.

The man clutching my hair had vivid green eyes, but they may as well have been black given the emotionless void they displayed. His hair was shaggy, brown with a mix of grey, the same colors that stood out in his unkempt stubble.

As if he needed any help looking rough.

So thats it for me. What were some of your favorites for 2013?

Top Books (Series) of 2013

So I am going make to separate lists for my best of 2013; one for book singles that I read in 2013, the other for book series that had at least one new book released this year. I decided to separate these just because its way too hard for me to separate one book from a series as better than the rest unless its god-awful. I know I am probably missing some but these were the first things that came to mind. I’m including a short recap on my thoughts on each series plus the synopsis for book one in each series. That being said, these are my favorites (in no particular order):

Review: Tender Mercies by Kitty Thomas

Release Date: May 6, 2011

Price: $4.95

From the Publisher:

“Grace. That word that finally meant something again. Mercy. Favor. Good will.”

Fed up with play kink, Grace Warner moves to an island that embraces erotic slavery to be with a man she met online. Within hours of her arrival, everything is ripped from her, and she quickly learns play is preferable to the realities of actual enslavement.

Asher Collins has spent the past year mourning and blaming himself for the death of his slave, Darcy. When Grace catches his eye at a showing, obviously abused, he becomes obsessed with buying her and finding a way to atone for his own past sins.

My thoughts:

I was looking through my to review list and this book caught my eye. I read it over 2 months ago but I remember it being such a mindfuck and out of this world good. I need to read more books by Kitty Thomas that much I know is true.

First off let me say that I think Grace is bat shit crazy for wanting hardcore kink so much that she moves to an island where she has no rights and is a legit sex slave. Um.. no thanks. In her defense, she did talk online to the guy that she moved there for almost a year. He seemed not crazy but of course once she got there the crazy was out in full effect. All I know is as I was reading this I was thinking I would have lost my shit. Some of the things that happen to her are extremely brutal and this book is not for the faint of heart.

Grace is abused by Master Lucas who brought her to the island. Some of the things that he does are unspeakable. Its disgusting. Lucky for Grace she gets sold to Asher. Lucas only does this because he thinks that Asher killed his previous slave and he wants nothing good to happen to Grace. Asher is still reeling from the accidental death of his previous slave and when he sees Grace for the first time he has to have her. He knows that she has been brutal abused, only an animal would bring her to an auction with fresh scars. Most people would be smart enough to have their slave in pristine condition if they want to get top dollar for them. He also afraid for what kind of person would want to buy her with all the scars she has. Grace is afraid for what her new master will be like. Asher has to get her to trust him and to trust himself with another person after his judgement was so wrong last time. It’s a great story of trust and letting the past go.

This is described as a dark erotic novel. It’s definitely dark. There are some erotic moments but it’s not like your traditional erotic novel.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Favorite Quotes:

“I’m sorry. I thought I could give you the option of freedom. I know it’s the right thing to do. I’ve only had you a day. I shouldn’t be this attached. But I can’t do it. It’s worse that I even offered. You’re never leaving here. I will never free you.”

“Thank you, Master.”
Asher tensed. “For?”
“For giving me the choice long enough to know I didn’t want that burden anymore. And for taking it away before I had to decide.” ”

Review: Jagged by Kristen Ashley

Release Date: November 5, 2013

Price: $3.79

From the Publisher:

The next novel in Kristen Ashley’s sizzling Colorado Mountain series introduces a new electrifying relationship that turns Carnal, Colorado into a hotbed of action, romance, and suspense.

An old flame rekindled . . .

Zara Cinders always knew Ham Reece was the one, but he wasn’t interested in settling down. When she found someone who was, Ham walked out of her life. Three years later, Zara’s lost her business, her marriage, and she’s barely getting by in a tiny apartment on the wrong side of the tracks. As soon as Ham hears about Zara’s plight, he’s on her doorstep offering her a lifeline. Now, it will take every ounce of will power she possesses to resist all that he offers.

Ham was always a traveling man, never one to settle down in one town, with one woman, for more time than absolutely necessary. But Ham’s faced his own demons, and he’s learned a lot. About himself, and about the life he knows he’s meant to live. So when he hears that Zara’s having a rough time, he wants to be the one to help. In fact, he wants to do more than that for Zara. A lot more. But first, he must prove to Zara that he’s a changed man.

My Thoughts:

I love KA. Seriously, I do. I look forward to anything new that comes out by her. She is not for everyone. Some people get really annoyed with how her male characters speak. Personally, I think it’s endearing and hot. Therefore, I love Kristen Ashley. I was a little concerned when I read the synopsis for this because what kind of hot alpha male goes by Ham? Seriously?! Honestly I got all worked up for nothing. Ham is hot! He also goes by Reece to anyone other than Zara which makes it infinitely more acceptable.

Alright, enough about names, let’s talk about the story. I found the premise of the book very interesting. I don’t think I have read anything like it. So, Ham and Zara met working at the same bar when she was 24 and he was 35. They spent 4 months living and working together and it was the best time of Zara’s life. She understood that one day he would leave because he was a drifter. He never stayed in one place for long. They still kept in contact and would call each other and hook up when he was traveling through. Five years of this…. Five! In Zara’s defense it wasn’t just booty calls. Anytime she needed someone, he would drop everything and come to her. So five years of this and one night Ham calls, Zara decides its time to break it off. Shes been dating this nice guy Greg for a couple of months and she knows that Ham will never give her the relationship she wants.

Zara gets married, then divorced a couple of years later. Her life is in shambles and who comes back? Ham. He refuses to take no for an answer on getting her back on her feet. She eventually gives in and its a rollercoaster ride of emotions after that. So many things happen that can’t talk about. As soon as I would get it together and stop the tears some other crazy shit would happen and the tears were back. There are a lot of touching moments. We find out what happened that pushed Zara and Ham together in the first place. We find out why Ham is so resistant to giving himself to a relationship.

All in all, I really loved this book. It was extremely touching and well written. The only thing I can fault KA for is sometimes she is a little long-winded and books go on longer than I feel they should. Not the case on this one.

Review: Creed by Kristen Ashley (Unfinished Hero #2)

Released 09/15/12

382 pages

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

From the Publisher:

Way too young, eleven year old Tucker Creed and his six year old neighbor, Sylvie Bissenette, find they have something awful in common. Creed then decides he’s going to do everything in his limited power to shield his Sylvie from her ordeal. So he does and Creed and Sylvie form a bond that grows and blossoms with their ages.

They plot to leave their lives behind, the town they live in that will hold them down and the histories they share that, unless they break free, will bury them. Sylvie goes to their special place, Creed never shows and she doesn’t see him again until it’s too late.

With Creed gone, Sylvie is forced to endure a nightmare and do the unspeakable to end it. To deal, she develops a hard shell with sharp edges that very few can break through. So when Creed again finds his Sylvie, he discovers the girl he loved is locked away and he has to find his way back into her heart without getting shredded in the process.

THIS BOOK! I did not see this coming. This book is legitimately in my top 10 favorite books ever if not top-five. Like seriously, I have never loved two characters as much as I love Sylvie in Creed. At first, it took me a while to get into this book. I believe the first time that Sylvie in the creed get together. Period that’s when I knew it was on. I absolutely fell for both of these characters.

Sylvie works for Knight. Creed does his own thing. They come together to work on a case for Knight. Sylvie loves night, not like that, as best friends. She complicit me trust him. And she feels slightly betrayed when she’s forced to work with Creed who he knows is her childhood sweetheart. This book is told in alternating time periods. It goes between now and when Sylvie and Creed were younger. So what happened was Creed ended up leaving and he promised Sylvie that he would come back for her but he never did. Since he didn’t come back for her she was forced into this relationship with this other man by her father of all people. I don’t give away the whole story by telling exactly what happened but I think is important to know that each of their foundations is skewed since they don’t know the story from the other person’s perspective.

Honestly this is a five out of five because there are no two characters that can really compare to Sylvie and Creed for me. I don’t think I have loved both the hero and heroine is as much as I’ve loved these two characters in the book. This is the first time that I’ve loved both main characters hands-down. At first, I was a little put off by Sylvie and the whole story but I had read such great reviews that I kept going. Not to mention Knight is one of my favorite books ever. In the end, you have to read this. That is a statement, it’s not an “if you like this book you should read…” it’s a “I don’t care what you have read, you have to read this”

Favorite Quotes:

Born to love you, baby,” he repeated. “Die lovin’ you, my Sylvie.”

“You need me. You won’t stay away and you won’t let me go because, baby, you can’t breathe without me.”

“Some people get to live life. Some people survive it. We’re survivors. We can carve out our pieces of happy, and, I swear to God, baby, right now, you got my vow, for you and for me, the rest of our lives, I’ll bust my ass to carve our piece of happy.”

Review: Rock with Me by Kristen Proby (With Me in Seattle Series)

Release Date: 4/30/13

Pages: 298

Price: $3.99

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

From the Publisher:

Front Man Leo Nash from the world-famous rock band, Nash, is the last person on earth Samantha Williams would trust. She’s already learned about loving a celebrity the hard way and isn’t signing up for another lesson.
Every time Sam gives Leo attitude, he wants to knock that chip off her fragile little shoulder. What the hell did he ever do to her, anyway? He’s not used to women treating him like he’s poisonous, and he isn’t about to let her run away every time he gets close. He’s had enough of people running away to last him a lifetime…when this one runs, he gives chase. But, catching Sam isn’t as hard as he thought.
The sexual attraction between them is so thick, Sam can practically hold it in her hand. There’s no way she can deny herself the promise of pleasure being with Leo would provide. But, pleasure always comes with pain and when secrets are revealed and trust is challenged, who will run and who will chase?

So, I’m a little late reading this. I honestly love the With Me in Seattle Series and I like series like this where the story actually ends at the end of the book but through other characters we still get a glimpse of what happens afterward. I like spin offs. This may be because the first erotic romance novels I read were by Megan Hart and all of her novels are stand alone but there is a reading order because the characters are intertwined. Anyway, so this book is about Leo who we saw in Play with Me which was Meg and Will’s story. Sam has appeared in all 3 books. Meg and Leo were in foster care together and Sam is Will’s sister.

This is going to be pretty short as I don’t have a lot to say about it which is not a bad thing. I thought the story was well paced and well written. The connection between Sam and Leo is instant and their reaction and banter is hilarious. Sam is very much an independent woman which I like; I am not a fan of spineless characters. At times Sam is a bit headstrong and difficult but I will take that over spineless, insecure characters any day of the week. Leo is a Rock star so of course he is used to people using him to get somewhere. He never has that thought with Sam. While she can be a bit cold to others she really has a warm heart and wants to help others. Sam is the one that is used to being used because of her famous family and that’s why she is so independent and sometimes standoffish.

Sam and Leo have some hot sex. Kristen is like a master at writing sex scenes that are realistic yet scorching on the sex scale. I will read anything she writes. Honestly, in most other series’ book four is in no way as good as maybe the first two. Kristen knows the secret of keeping it fresh. All of the characters male and female are different from previous books so it doesn’t feel like you are reading the same thing over and over. Also, since the characters from earlier novels continue to appear it maintains the connection or theme within the novels which helps because the characters are so different.

If you haven’t read any of the With Me in Seattle Series you must be living under a rock and you need to get out from under there and pick up all the books. You will not be disappointed.

Favorite Quotes:

“I’ll take you hard, and soft, and every way in between.”

“I’m going to make love to you until you’re shaking and don’t remember who you are.”

“As soon as I get you home I’m going to fuck you until you can’t walk”
